Marathon – A young girl is dead after a sport utility vehicle she was driving went into the water off of Aviation Boulevard in Marathon Thursday night.
17 year old Amber Kogelis of Lower Matecumbe Key was driving the Ford Explorer with 24 year old Michael Mearns as a passenger when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle. It swerved off of the road and entered the water in the vicinity of 7200 Aviation Boulevard.
Mearns was able to escape from the vehicle. When deputies and paramedics arrived on the scene, Kogelis was still trapped inside. A joint rescue effort by Sgt. Joel Slough, a good Samaritan who identified himself as a “rescue diver” and Marathon Fire / Rescue paramedics began. She was pulled from the vehicle by paramedics and CPR was performed. She was rushed to Fishermen’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded and will be investigating the accident.
