Time for Click it or Ticket – Make sure you are wearing your Seat belt!

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the State wide “Click it or Ticket” campaign coming up May 23rd through June 5th. During this time period, there will be extra enforcement throughout the Florida keys for this violation.

At any time of the year, the Sheriff’s Office has a zero tolerance policy for not wearing a seat belt or for not properly buckling up children. If you are stopped and you are not wearing one, there will be no warnings issued; you will get a ticket. If an officer sees someone in a car who is under 18 years of age who is not wearing a seatbelt, it is a primary violation, There doesn’t have to be any other violation to make the stop under those circumstances and the fine amount is a costly $116.00.

So, stay safe and buckle up. It makes sense, and it is the law.

  1. Seatbelt Law should be repealed, does save lives but it should be personal choice. I can get out and ride my motorcycle anywhere in florida without a helmet and that is not a violation of rights, but riding in a car with air bags not wearing a seeat belt is a violation. You may also ride bicycle arcoss the florida keys bridges with or wothout a helmet and are at greater risk than drivers with air bags but not wearing a seatbelt is a civil penalty, does not seem right. This should be fought in florida legislation and repealed. Officers have bigger responsabilities in KEYS THAN STOPPING SOMEONE FOR SEAT BELTS WHEN PERSONS PASS FREQUENTLY ON BRIDGES OR HAND OUT SUNROOFS TAKING PICTURES. I also witness many popersons going down highway wit feet on dashboard, seat belt or not I gurantee two broken legs in a vehicle crash. Just venting I support Bob Peryam and Rick Ramsey this is not personal it is a DMV and legislative issue that should be fought
