Video surveillance from one of the homes helped to solve the crimes. Detectives say the first theft took place in April, when a jet ski trailer was stolen from a home on Eagle Avenue in Key Largo. Then, June 21st, a jet ski on a trailer was stolen from a home on Grassy Road. Finally, on June 27th a man who lives on Calder Road in Key Largo called to report his Boston Whaler was taken from underneath his home. The man told detectives he had video cameras which showed the theft.
The surveillance footage showed a Jaguar sedan pull up to the house. A man got out and cut the lock on the boat trailer, hooked it up to his car and drove away with it. Detectives were able to obtain the car’s license tag. The car was registered to 22 year old Rigoberto Vazquez of Miami.
They went to Vazquez’ home. The Jaguar was found parked in front of his house. With the assistance of Miami-Dade Police they spoke with Vazquez, confronting him with the information they had. Vazquez admitted to stealing the boat, the jet ski and the trailers. The engine from the Boston Whaler was found at his home, attached to another vessel. Tools he used to commit the crimes were found in the Jaguar.
Vazquez was charged with three counts of burglary, three counts of grand theft and possession of burglary tools. Detectives Francisco Gaete and Yunier Galvez worked together on the cases.
