Man charged with cutting man, trying to throw him in front of vehicle

A Tavernier man was arrested Saturday afternoon for cutting another man on the hand with a box cutter, then trying to throw him in front of a moving vehicle.

Deputy Matt Koval responded to an area behind Mariner’s Hospital at 5:20 p.m. to reports of two men fighting. When he arrived, the two men were there along with a hospital security guard.

The victim told Deputy Koval he and 48 year old Mark Peto were drinking beer underneath the movie theater at Tavernier Towne when Peto suddenly attacked him, cutting his thumb with a box cutter. The victim said he was walking to the hospital to have his thumb treated when Peto attacked him again, grabbing him around the neck with his arm. Peto then tried to throw him in front of an ambulance. The ambulance swerved around them.

The security guard witnessed the part of the fight which took place near the hospital. He was able to intervene and get the two men separated before Deputy Koval arrived.

Peto was arrested. He was charged with aggravated battery, aggravated assault and battery.
