Inmate in Stock Island jail commits suicide

An inmate being held in the Monroe County Detention Center on Stock Island hung himself with his bed sheet in his cell Friday afternoon.

Detention deputies discovered 29 year old Glenn Breeland Jr.  in his cell just after 5 p.m. He had wrapped the sheet around a shelf in the cell and the other end around his neck. He kneeled down on the ground and leaned forward, cutting off his ability to breath.

They removed the sheet and began life saving measures, using CPR and an AED in attempts to get him breathing. Nurses from the jail medical unit and Paramedics responded but Breeland could not be revived.

Breeland, who is from Key Largo, was arrested in May of 2013 after a domestic battery incident during which he beat and choked his ex-girlfriend.

Detective Deborah Ryan from the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Detective John Underwood responded to the Detention Center to investigate Breeland’s death.
