The body of a man reported missing Monday was found offshore of Summerland Key today.
68 year old Charles Salyers was reported missing Monday by a friend and a family member. Salyers lived offshore on a boat moored in Niles Channel. He reportedly used a dinghy with a small motor on it to travel to and from his boat. His friend said he last saw Salyers’ on Saturday morning. He said Salyers did not show up for church on Sunday and he never misses church. He said he began to worry about Salyers, so he went to his boat to check on him and found the boat open. He said Salyers never leaves it open. He said he then found Salyers’ truck parked at the bridge and no dinghy at the bridge or at the boat.
Deputy Wendy Negron, who took the initial report, contacted Salyers’ nephew. The nephew said Salyers calls him every day and he hasn’t heard from him since the afternoon of the 21st. He said Salyers sounded fine when he last spoke with him.
Salyers’ truck was, indeed, found parked at the north end of the Niles Channel Bridge. A check of his boat turned up his wallet, keys and cell phone on board, but no sign of him. The U.S. Coast Guard and Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission assisted in searching for him. His body was located by the FWC just after 10 a.m. today.
Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office and FWC are working together on the case. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of his death.
