The victim caught 37 year old John Bishop rummaging through his unlocked Chrysler van and called the Sheriff’s Office. He then detained Bishop on the scene until deputies arrived.
Property from a second vehicle, parked nearby, was found in Bishop’s pocket. The owner of the second vehicle could not be contacted at the time the crime took place.
Bishop told deputies he is homeless and lived at the lower Keys shelter for a time. He said he took the bus northbound to the 74 mile marker. He said he needed a vehicle, and he contacted a woman on the internet who told him he could take her car. He said he was going through the van because he was confused about what car she was giving him. He could give no specifics about who the woman was or how to contact her.
Bishop was taken into custody, charged with vehicle burglary. A second count of vehicle burglary is pending until the second vehicle’s owner can be located.
