One attempted boat theft suspect arrested

One man has been apprehended in connection with the attempted theft of a boat in Islamorada Tuesday night.

Tuesday just before midnight, deputies responded to a report of two men in a black Jeep attempting to steal a flats boat that was on a trailer parked at the 84.3 mile marker of the highway near Abel’s Marina. When Deputy Michael Onsgard arrived, he saw the two men. He ordered them to stop, but both of them fled – one on foot and one in the Jeep with the trailer still attached by chains.

Deputies chased both men. The man in the Jeep, later identified as 48 year old Ricardo Jimenez of Cape Coral, Florida, pulled off the road and jumped out of the vehicle, running into a wooded area in the vicinity of the 84 mile marker. Neither man was initially caught, but investigations continued. The vehicle was impounded.

At 10 a.m., Sheriff’s dispatchers got a call of a suspicious man on the old highway in Islamorada near the 84 mile marker. The man was Jimenez. He was taken into custody. Deputy Onsgard positively identified him as one of the men he saw trying to steal the boat on the trailer.

Jimenez was charged with fleeing from police, grand theft, resisting arrest and driving with his license suspended multiple times. He was booked into jail.

Investigations into the incident are continuing. Detective Yunier Galvez has been assigned as lead investigator in the case.
