Multiple vessel burglaries in Marathon

Several vessels kept at a Marathon marina were burglarized overnight between Thursday and Friday.

Seven boats at Shelter Bay Marina on Coco Plum Road in Marathon had electronics and fishing equipment stolen. Crime Scene Detective Barney Sajdak responded to the scene and processed all of the boats for possible evidence.

Sheriff Rick Ramsay continues to remind people to remove such items from their boats when they are not in use. This applies even if the boat is being kept in marina storage. It is also a good idea if you are keeping your boat in storage at a marina to ask detailed questions about security in place at the business, such as working surveillance cameras, proper lighting, and other security measures in place.

Anyone with information about these crimes should contact the Sheriff’s Office. Callers may also contact Crime Stoppers of the Florida Keys. Tipsters can remain anonymous and, if a tip leads to an arrest in the case, the caller would be eligible for a cash reward. The Crime Stoppers hot line number is 1-800-346-TIPS. Tips may also be submitted on line at www.tipsubmit.com or via a text message to 274637 using the keyword TIP136.
