Woman jogger attacked in Marathon

A 22 year old woman, jogging in the early morning hours in Marathon, was attacked this  morning.

The victim said she was on the bike path on Knight’s Key headed toward the old Seven Mile Bridge at 5:30 when a man grabbed her from behind. She said she yelled and screamed for help and fought him off. She was able to escape and hid in bushes nearby. When it became light, she came out of hiding and approached another jogger who helped her call the Sheriff’s Office.

She suffered minor injuries. Detectives say the description of her attacker is sketchy, but he may be a white male, approximately 5’9” tall with a thin build. He was wearing a long sleeve T-shirt and shorts and his face was covered.

“This is a very unusual crime for our county. Attacks like this one don’t happen often here,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “We want to urge anyone who knows anything about this crime to come forward as soon as possible. We have a safe community and we would like to keep it that way by catching this man and putting him in jail.”

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.  Anyone with information about this crime should contact the Sheriff’s Office. Callers may also contact Crime Stoppers of the Florida Keys. Tipsters can remain anonymous and, if a tip leads to an arrest in the case, the caller would be eligible for a cash reward. The Crime Stoppers hot line number is 1-800-346-TIPS.
