Inmate death, Stock Island Detention Center

An inmate at the Stock Island Detention Center died in the early morning hours today.

25 year old Christopher Cox, who was being held on federal firearms charges, was pronounced dead at Lower Keys Hospital at 5:08 a.m.

Cox was housed in a single person cell with no roommate. At 4:10 a.m. this morning, Corrections deputies performing a routine check of inmates found Cox hanging from the neck  in his cell.

They immediately began performing CPR on Cox and called for an ambulance. Cox was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Cox was arrested Wednesday morning after a long standoff with deputies in Marathon.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will be the investigating agency in this case.
