Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team helps after Hurricane Ian

Dive Team Leader and Upper Keys Marine Deputy Nelson Sanchez, Reserve Deputy Sam Lapinsky, and Director of Special Investigations Vince Weiner deployed this month to Collier County as part of a special assignment requested by the State of Florida in response to Hurricane Ian.

They joined several other dive teams from Florida and were assigned to Everglades City, Chokoloskee, and Marco Island. The team was tasked with identifying submerged objects that posed a danger to navigation while using the Sheriff’s Office’s side-scan sonar. They recorded approximately 50 miles of sea floor at 3 mph — very tedious work.

“The Sheriff’s Office is proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our Florida Sheriffs Association partners and fellow citizens affected by this deadly storm,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “There are 67 Sheriffs in Florida and we will always be ready to help each other when disaster strikes.”
