Key Largo – Deputies on routine patrol stopped a vehicle
which was driving with it’s headlights off. They found a large amount of
marijuana inside.
Deputy Bryan Cross and Sgt. Jason Madnick saw the gold
colored Suburban turn onto the highway from a side street near the 97 mile
marker at 1 a.m. The vehicle did not have its headlights on. As the car passed
the two patrol cars, the driver turned on his vehicle’s lights. Deputy Cross
decided to pull the vehicle over to make sure the driver was all right.
As Deputy Cross approached the car, he heard something hit
the ground on the passenger side, as if it was thrown from the window. Sgt.
Madnick recovered a glass smoking pipe on that side of the vehicle. On the
floorboards in the back of the Suburban, Deputy Cross spotted a bud of
Marijuana. Sticking out from under the rear passenger seat was a plastic bag
with 74 grams of marijuana inside. In the rear passenger’s pocket was another
plastic bag with 14 grams of marijuana inside. He also had $604 in cash in his
pockets, which was seized.
19 year old Daniel Ospina of Tavernier, was arrested for
possession of marijuana after admitting all the marijuana was his. The front
passenger, 19 year old Kevin Henry of Tavernier, admitted the pipe was his so
he was issued a notice to appear in court for possession of drug paraphernalia.
The driver, 19 year old Erdel Yanes of Plantation Key, was issued a warning for
driving without headlights.
