Inmate dies at Stock Island jail

An inmate died at the Stock Island Detention Center of apparent natural causes.

Detective Manny Cuervo said there were no signs of foul play in the death of the 52 year old man, whose name is not being released until his family can be notified of his death. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of his death. He was in sick bay in the facility due to numerous and extensive medical issues.

His death took place Friday night just after 10 p.m.; the on duty nurse checked on him and asked the sick bay officer to call for an ambulance due to his condition. A short time later, just before paramedics arrived, he stopped breathing. CPR was begun; when paramedics arrived in sick bay they continued CPR, transporting him to Lower Keys Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was in jail on drug charges; he was arrested in January of 2011 by Key West Police for sale of cocaine.
