Man faces a total of 23 years in prison for marine theft cases

Roberto Morales Diaz, convicted and sentenced on May 26th for an Upper Keys marine theft case, was in court again today, this time in Marathon on another marine related theft case.

He was sentenced by Judge Ruth Becker to 10 more years in prison. This is in addition to the 13 years he was sentenced to for the Upper Keys case.

The Marathon case involved a number of vessel burglaries at Shelter Bay Marina in Marathon in May of 2015. Detectives found an open water bottle on the scene which was sent to FDLE for processing. DNA on the water bottle was identified as belonging to Morales Diaz.

  1. Hats off to Law enforcement in Monroe county and to Judge Becker and Judge Luis Garcia for the appropriate sentence. Thieves like this guy seem to steal with impunity, so and this sends a strong message to them and to law enforcement in other Florida counties what the citizens expect to be done about it. Bravo! From an ordinary guy who just had his twin outboard motors stolen a month ago in Naples.
