Man arrested after fleeing from and threatening Deputies

A 40-year-old Fort Lauderdale, Florida man was arrested early Friday morning after he entered the Big Pine Key Walgreens, screamed profanities at employees and then fled from responding Deputies.

Kenneth Earl Sutton was charged with making threats against a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Multiple Deputies were involved in detaining Sutton, but the long ruckus began when Deputies Brandon White and Jonathan Lane were called to the Walgreens at 11:59 p.m. Thursday after a man, later identified as Sutton, walked in and began cursing at employees.

Deputy White spotted Sutton behind the store whereupon Sutton began yelling hysterically. Deputy White asked what was wrong, but Sutton turned and took flight into the woods toward Jig’s Bait & Tackle. Deputy White gave chase and was joined by Deputy Lane. Deputy Lane found Sutton muttering incoherent gibberish whilst refusing to show one of his hands. Deputy Lane drew his service weapon and again ordered Sutton to show both his hands. Deputy White soon arrived, but Sutton had apparently disturbed a bee or hornet’s nest. Both Deputies were forced to retreat given the attack sprung by the insects. Sutton then continued his flight deeper into the woods, running now from Deputies as well as the stinging insects.

Sgt. David Lariz as well as Deputies Juan Martin-Reyes and Ryan Chlebanowski now converged on the scene. Deputy Lane circled back toward to the Walgreens and again saw Sutton whereupon he ordered Sutton to the ground at Taser®point. Sutton was detained at that time.

Sutton went limp Deputies tried to place him inside a patrol car. Sutton complained of leg pain. Sutton began several attempts to kick out the back window of Deputy Martin-Reyes’ patrol car. Sutton then complained of leg cramps. He asked Deputies to punch him the leg several times to relief the cramps. Deputies did not punch Sutton in the leg. Sutton stated he was an Army Ranger and would kill the Deputies. Sutton attempted to kick one of the Deputies in the face.

Sgt. Lariz assisted paramedics as they transported Sutton to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island. Once at the hospital, Deputy White could hear Sutton screaming while still inside the ambulance. Sutton stated he was going to kill Sgt. Lariz and all the members of his family. Sutton cursed at Sgt. Lariz. Sutton attempted to spit and bite Sgt. Lariz. Sutton cursed the hospital staff and refused to have his blood pressure taken whilst resisting staff. Eventually, Sutton feel asleep.

Sutton was eventually medically cleared by hospital staff.

Sutton was taken to jail.
