The Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad determined Saturday that an
ammunition canister left in newspaper box was not a bomb, but a set of audio
speakers.
A retired military veteran called the Sheriff’s Office at
10:35 a.m. from the IHOP® restaurant parking lot, 6495 Overseas Highway, where
he had attempted to grab a newspaper from a newspaper box. He found a freshly
painted, military-style ammunition box, which he found suspicious.
Sgt. Christian Kellenberger responded and also found the
ammunition canister to be suspicious.
The Sheriff’s Office quickly determined the canister had
been converted into a speaker box.
The ammunition/speaker box was removed without incident.
The owner of the object is unknown at this time.
