A 46-year-old Miami man was arrested Sunday afternoon on Big
Pine Key after fleeing from Deputies and a federal law enforcement officer on
U.S. 1.
Jason Reid Bervaldi was charged with fleeing and eluding,
resisting arrest and tampering with evidence.
Deputy Aaron Roddy saw a black Toyota Tundra traveling
southbound at 2 p.m. with what appeared to be illegally tinted windows. Deputy
Roddy stopped the truck at Mile marker 30.5. Bervaldi was the driver and sole
occupant of the truck. Bervaldi became argumentative when he was told why he
was stopped, stating he changed the window tint last year.
While Deputy Roddy was speaking to Bervaldi outside the
truck, Bervaldi went back to the truck and stated he was checking on something
when he jumped in, closed the door and drove southbound. Deputy Roddy informed
other Deputies that Bervadli fled.
Multiple Deputies pursued Bervaldi, including a U.S. Border
Protection vehicle.
Deputy Roddy saw Bervaldi throw a bleach bottle from the
Toyota. Deputy Roddy saw liquid spilling from the passenger door as Bervaldi
continued to flee.
Bervaldi eventually pulled over
at Mile Marker 28 and was taken into custody without further incident.
Deputies found the bleach bottle. The liquid inside the
bottle tested positive for cocaine. The inside of the truck smelled of bleach
and several areas had bleach stains. Multiple torn plastic baggies and plastic
wrap consistent with drug packaging were found in the truck. $446 in cash was
also found in the truck.
Bervaldi was taken to jail.
