Convenience store robbed at gunpoint

Key Largo – A convenience store – and one of its customers – was robbed at gunpoint Sunday afternoon.

The clerk and the customer both told Deputy James Warino a man wearing dark clothing, a blue hat, black gloves, sunglasses and a bandana over his face walked into the store just after 5 p.m. She told him he couldn’t wear the bandana in the store. He replied by lifting his shirt and showing her a handgun in his waistband. He told the clerk he wanted the money from the register. She told him there was none.

He then turned to a customer in the store and demanded money, saying “I’m desperate”. The customer handed over $2.00 and the suspect left the store.

A witness outside who saw the suspect walk in waited in his truck because he suspected a robbery was about to happen. He followed the suspect as he left the store and saw him get into a dark colored Saturn. He followed the car northbound, but finally lost it in traffic. He called the Sheriff’s Office and met with Deputy Warino to give him the information.

Detectives are investigating the case.
