Sheriff’s Major Crimes detectives are investigating the
death of a man who appears to have jumped from the Whale Harbor Bridge in the
early morning hours.
At 3 a.m., deputies in Islamorada found a vehicle
unoccupied, parked at the top of the Whale Harbor Bridge. They found a phone
and a wallet on top of the car; a pack of cigarettes were found on the railing
of the bridge.
They called for assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard and
Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for a search for a person possibly in
the water. At 5:20 a.m., FWC reported finding a man’s body in the water under
the bridge. The Sheriff’s dive team was called out to assist in recovery of the
body and the vehicle was towed to the Sheriff’s substation on Plantation Key
for further investigation.
While the body has been tentatively identified, detectives
are waiting to release the victim’s identity until they can notify his next of
kin.
