A Stock Island man was arrested today, charged with throwing
an ax at his father, injuring his wrist.
The incident took place at 10 a.m. at 6475 2nd
Street on Stock Island. The 47 year old victim told Sgt. David Lariz he asked
his son, 26 year old Austin Odom, for some money to buy food. He said his son
became angry. He slapped a $100 bill
onto the counter, grabbed an ax and chopped the bill in half. He then
allegedly threw the ax at his father, who reportedly ducked and put his hand
up to protect his head; he was subsequently hit by the ax on the wrist.
A witness who was across the street said he heard the victim
screaming for help. He walked over to see what was happening. He saw the victim
holding his wrist. The witness confronted the suspect and talked him into
handing over the ax. When deputies arrived, the witness turned over the ax and directed them upstairs in the building, where the suspect was located.
The victim was taken to Lower Keys Hospital where he is
being treated for serious injuries to his wrist. The suspect told Deputy Matt
Dowling his father was bothering him about money. He said he refused to give
him money and his father called him names. He said he became enraged and threw
the ax at his father.
The suspect was arrested, charged with battery with a deadly
weapon and he was booked into jail.
